David Kalman Rubin, 90, of Falmouth, passed away suddenly on April 13, 2025.
David was born to the late Joseph Rubin and Matilda Lewitsky Rubin on March 8, 1935, and was raised in Chelsea, MA. He was a proud graduate of Chelsea High School in 1952, Dartmouth College in 1956, and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1961. He completed his pathology residency at Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals Cleveland. David additionally served for two years as a medical officer in the U.S. Public Health Service, affectionately referring to his military service as the time he “fought the battle of Baltimore.”
David met Phyllis Frogel in Baltimore in December 1960 while on a double date with other people. They had their first date in Boston on January 1, 1961, became engaged in the summer of 1961, and were married on July 1, 1962. They celebrated their 50th anniversary surrounded by friends and family and remained happily married until her death in November 2020.
After spending the early years of their marriage in Baltimore, Cleveland, and Milwaukee, David and Phyllis moved to Taunton in 1969 and then settled in Raynham to raise their three children—Jonathan, Pam, and Lisa.
David spent his 40-year career at Morton Hospital, where he served as chief pathologist and head of the laboratory. His routine also included running with his buddies from the Taunton YMCA and weekly art lessons.
As their retirements approached, David and Phyllis relocated to Falmouth, where they enjoyed the Cape Cod Symphony, walks on the bike trail to Woods Hole, and rooting for New England sports teams. He was also a prolific amateur artist who enjoyed giving art lessons to his grandchildren.
In the years since the loss of his wife, David appreciated his quiet independence. He exercised regularly at the gym, read several daily newspapers, and remained steadfast in his support of the Red Sox. In fact, just last month he was surrounded by his extended family and longtime friends at a Red Sox-themed 90th birthday party in Falmouth.
David devoted decades of service to Congregation Agudath Achim in Taunton. He felt strongly that Taunton’s long standing Jewish community, albeit small, deserved to have a sacred and welcoming place to worship and celebrate together. His generosity will hopefully enable the Congregation to continue to thrive in his memory.
David is survived by his children Jonathan (Sheryl), Pam (Russ Seligman), and Lisa (David Antoine) and his grandchildren (Micah and Carly Rubin; Teddy and Jamie Seligman; and Danny, Jared, and Kayla Antoine). He was predeceased by his brother, Richard S. Rubin. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Barbara Frogel Rippa and Wendy Alpert Rubin, and numerous nieces and nephews, nearly all of whom he felt fortunate enough to have seen in the past few weeks.
The burial ceremony will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations to Congregation Agudath Achim in David’s memory.
This beautiful water color of our synagogue was made by David Rubin for the Agudath Achim centennial celebration.
